This is obviously a massive breakthrough, one can't say enough what this means for our party. How fantastic would it be to see another 2 or 3 follow suit and defect as well. It surely has planted a small seed in certain tory members who are fed up with their own party policy. media exposure/credibility = more votes. This news will resonate with Hardcore tory voters as well, it will certainly cause in some voters who were borderline now defecting to ukip, how many? only time will tell. One thing we can't do now is sit on our laurels, this opportunity really needs to be jumped on. I agree with all that we need to start campaigning now to hold that seat. Leaflets need to go through doors in that area from now until the next GE. Great news for all of us in UKIP but let us all keep working hard. Lets make this the start of even bigger and better things to come.

Have you thought of approaching the EDP as has been suggested to see if they will agree not to stand in the ward, and encourage any support they have to vote UKIP? I see the FEP have done the same.
Combining the various flavours of Eurosceptacism in this ward could be good expermiment to see what sort of vote could be achieved as well.

There needs to be that sort of pragmatic pulling together between different anti-EU factions.

Spink re-elected could really start a band-wagon.

Yes indeed we really need to have talks with the factions now.

Fan-*******-tastic

I am tempted to rejoin the ranks. When my Libertarian membership expires, there will be some competition.

AHAHAHAHA!

Iain Dale is sitting on something sharp, as per usual.

Quote:
When Bob Spink had the Conservative Whip withdrawn from him I predicted that he would end up in UKIP. I said at the time that they were welcome to him. I haven't changed my mind. This isn't a defection in he normal sense in that most sensible people in the Tory Party (ie those who know him) will be glad to see the back of him. Many of his views are repellant to the majority of the Conservative Party. I'm not saying this out of any sense of bitterness at his actions - I said it at the time. The lack of support for him in the comments both here and on other blogs was telling.

I will make a further prediction. Within six months Nigel Farage will rue the day he ever met Bob Spink. As UKIP's only MP (albeit not elected under that banner) he will have delusions of grandeur and believe that he should be the de facto leader of UKIP. He's that kind of man. For Farage he spells trouble with a capital T.

UKIP's influence is already on the wane. Spink joining them is not likely to improve their fortunes. Indeed, rather the reverse.

As I again mentioned on the forum only the other day - the eurosceptic DUP (the Democratic Unionist Party of Dr. Ian Paisley MP) is the fourth largest party in the House of Commons with 9 MPs.

They also run what I think is the best party political website of any UK political party - the presentation and design of which UKIP should emulate:
