Default NEC meeting of 7 April 2008 (from ukip.org)

UK Independence Party - NEC meeting of 7 April 2008

Quote:
NEC meeting of 7 April 2008
Monday, 21 April 2008

Following the recent election, the National Executive Committee now consists of the following members:

David Abbott
Marta Andreasen (Treasurer, ex-officio)
Alan Bown
David Campbell Bannerman
Derek Clark (MEP representative)
Douglas Denny (re-elected)
Lisa Duffy (newly elected)
Eric Edmond (newly elected)
Nigel Farage (Party Leader)
Christopher Gill
Rachel Oxley (Deputy Chairman)
Jill Seymour
John Whittaker (Chairman, ex-officio)
Delroy Young
Michael Zuckerman (Party Secretary, re-elected)

The Chairman welcomed the new and re-elected members.

Party Leader’s report
The Leader observed that, in speaking recently to a variety of audiences around the UK, these audiences had been larger than usual and also younger. More had been joining the Party and a momentum was developing which would accelerate once election candidates were in place.

Although numbers of local election candidates had been disappointing in some areas, in others there had been a good response. There are over 200 General Election candidates adopted so far.

If Boris Johnson becomes Mayor of London, the resulting by-election in Henley will be an important opportunity for UKIP and we should be making plans for this.

A good number of applications to be candidates for the 2009 Euro-election have been received. The Tories had revised their selection rules, ruling that sitting MEPs are automatically at the top of the list and the next person on the list must be female. This had caused a great deal of dissent within the Party. UKIP would not be practising either positive discrimination or favouritism for sitting MEPs.

Candidate selection: European elections 2009
The NEC approved a revision of the rules and timetable for the selection of candidate lists for the June 2009 Euro-election (see Members Section: European elections 2009), together with the relevant application form and other documentation The final ranking will be determined by members’ ballots in the regions. The objective is to achieve an attractive list of MEP candidates in each region and top-listed candidates who will be a credit to the party throughout their five- year term, if elected.

Additions to the previously agreed (September 2008) selection procedures include rules restricting candidate promotion and a code of conduct setting out what the Party expects of its MEPs.

A business plan for the European elections is in preparation and, given the vital importance of finance, a number of fundraising events have been scheduled. A campaign manager and a London campaign office will need to be funded. All members are urged to undertake fundraising activities in their areas.

Web-site development
The NEC approved a proposal for upgrading the Party website.

Some interesting stuff as per usual, though perhaps little for the gossip & rumourmongers here. In my view far too much about 2009 and far too little about the 2008 elections.

No mention of Ski but the concept that a publicly released NEC meeting report would refer to the consideration of an individuals membership application as some here seem to think it might/should have is beyond all rational comprehension.

In fairness, it is largely too late for anything to do with the 2008 elections. Presumably any decisions and preparations would have been taken in the previous months.
