Does anyone know if Derek Conway or Bob Spink are being approached by UKIP for membership? I realise Conway would be controversial, but what of Spink? There was talk but its died down.

You might have better luck with Spink.

Farage dislikes Spink, but he hopes to bring him into UKIP as soon as possible after the May 1st elections. The hope is that getting a Westminster seat will blot out the bad election results that are anticipated.
Incidentally, Spink was somewhat pro-EU in the past, and he voted for Maastricht. He embraced euroscepticism only after he learned he was to be deselected. |

Sounds like Conway is beyond the pale, and Spink is seen as a possible. So there is something in the talking, then. If Spink did join UKIP, his vote at the next election would not be derisory. He probably wouldn't win, but he would be a better rallying point than some unknown. I remember George Gardiner of Reigate being deselected at he did relatively well for the Referendum Party.

Such language, Richard.
Spink's deselection crisis goes back to his first term in the 90s, even before he lost his seat in 97. All this pre-dates BOO by a long way. His embracing of 'euroscepticism' was a defensive tool to stave off deselection. Get your own facts right Richard, before you start slinging abuse around. |

Heavens! This isn't very edifying, is it? The gist, in between the barbs, is that Spink is now a eurosceptic and is being courted now so that he can join UKIP after May 1st. Is that the basics of it?
