UKIP needs career politicians - people with a proven track record of campaigning and who are media savy.
Can any of us say we are happy with some of the excuses for UKIP MEPs we have at the moment?

The extremely rapid rise of Lisa Duffy from nowhere to receiving more votes than Farage to get on the NEC and being appointed head of the youth group in a matter of weeks highlights an interesting problem that I have written about before. The party doesn't have a structure in place to provide a ladder for up and coming people. In other words, there is no way to provide experience and testing. In a well run organisation, what Lisa Duffy has done would be nigh on impossible because there would be so many other well known candidates waiting in the wings with more experience and proven abilities within the party.
I am sure that she is absolutely competent and a good choice for the roles she now has. However, although it is a good sign that they are seeking new talent, the fact that she has been brought in and promoted so swiftly indicates that there isn't a healthy system in place. One way of finding new talent would be to have a shadow cabinet with a small team of advisors and researchers behind each appointment. This would provide up to fifty or so positions where new people could prove themselves, build up some experience, get some media training, get their names known, make some contacts and friends etc. The fact that UKIP doesn't have this system is going to leave it in trouble when it comes to the next EU elections. They are going to need a national and regional teams of competent and motivated people to promote the campaign, but where will they find them?

I first met her and Peter Reeve at the Candidate Conference before the 2005 General Election. They are both seem very hard working people and exactly what we need in UKIP. UKIP unfortunately could find itself a victim of its own success when the MEP Nomination process gets under way in earnest since there are UKIP winnable seats available so the stakes are much higher than 2004.
The highly parochial nature of UKIP Members almost guarantees favourite "local sons" will get selected rather than selection on merit or ability. Eastern region already has its heir apparent in place (well as far as a certain Mr Gulleyford is concerned) and anyone who might challenge that position is immediately subject to anonymous rumour and innuendo on this forum, I wonder why? The same scenario applied to DCB. There are some fairly obvious "Private - Keep out" signs being erected around various UKIP Fiefdoms at the moment! |

Many members in the NW were glad to see the back of both Reeve and Duffy. Duffy is not as popular in the East as she thinks. Many regard her as arrogant with an inflated opinion of herself. Farage only wants her as an MEP because she will do as she is told. It has nothing to do with talent. You should see her public speaking. Terrible! Her arrogance has also led to the resignation of more than one Young Independence member.

Main thing is that the MEP selection procedure is, and is seen to be, scrupulously fair. Christopher Gill is supposed to be over-seeing it Hope he takes a firm grip on it.

That will not happen. Farage wants Duffy. All it will take from from him is a 'quiet word' in Mr Gill's ear to ensure that Duffy gets through.
If I were an MEP candidate in the East I would keep a very close eye on how the members 'vote.' The East has just over 1700 members. No doubt Ms Duffy will get that and a few more for good measure just like the NEC election! |
