Gerard Batten took a drop in income when he took his seat: He should be excluded from any criticism of this nature.

And it is not generally appreciated .....Nigel Farage took a serious drop in income when he became closely involved in UKIP.

He was a comodities broker in the metals exchange in the City prior to getting involved in politics. He would have been very seriously rich compared to what he is now if he had stayed where he was instead.

I think it is very unfair that NF had to take a drop in salary - he should return to his previous employment forthwith!

Default David Campbell

it is true that Farage took a drop in salary when he became an MEP -about £10-000 a year-of course he is now well above an ordinary MEP as a leader of a group. I understood he was also a partner in a metals broking firm with his brother-dont know if he still is.

Sorry DD, I thought you meant that now you had secured your place on the NEC for another three years you intended to stop defending the indefensible and would use this three years to ensure that UKIP fulfilled its Destinney by helping make it a party which voters could vote for beyond a narrow band of Tory dissidents.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your response.

He claimed that he no longer had anything to do with the business at the leadership hustings, but I think that it emerged that he was still listed as company secretary (although that doesn't mean a great deal). I could be completely wrong though - this is third-hand information.

DCB's private life is nobody's business but his. And unless he has deliberately tried to mislead people then he has nothing to answer. I do not know and I certainly do not care in the slightest.

In my experience DCB is extremely hard working (considering he has a real job and works tirelessly for UKIP for free in his spare time!), is an excellent committee man with a good grasp of the policy. He has done sterling work coordinating the policy groups (no mean feat considering the opinionated members involved, and the scale of the operation). As has been said, he is not going to set the world on fire with his political/oratory skills, but he is able to handle himself in the media, has a good record in the private sector and government, is slightly younger than our present MEPs and is a genuine and decent guy. I can think of many far worse people to have on the lists.

Did his company, a timber futures trading outfit based in Gibraltar, not go bust?
