And the europhiles would then use their win in a referendum on UK membership of the EU to push for more UK sovereignty (what is left of it) to be passed ever more rapidly to their EU masters in Brussels (something which they would/will have problems in doing if we won an EU Treaty referendum instead). To win a referendum on the UK quitting the EU we need several years to lobby the 40 million voters in the UK so they do not support the status quo (which is what many electors tend to do in referendums). |

I am saddened at you lack of faith in the British people.
I guess Britain is finished then.

I have great faith in the British people - as I wrote in another thread: it is possible that once an "in or out" referendum campaign was under way the europhiles could 'lose control' of it and support for getting out of the EU could start to climb substantially as more electors heard about the damage the EU is doing and how much it is costing them financially.
In Sweden, the campaign for the euro was well ahead, but once the referendum campaign on the euro there got going they started to lose support rapidly despite allegedly having six times the funds of the anti-euro campaign. I just think that our chances of winning a referendum on UK membership of the EU and of getting out of the EU would be greater if we spent time first lobbying all voters across the country. This could take several years. I am confident that the UK is going to leave the EU (if the EU does not fall to bits first). Last edited by Britannist; 28-02-2008 at 02:02 AM. |

I don't understand why you think the millions of Poles, Turks, Romanians and Bulgarians that are replacing the British in ever increasing numbers, will somehow want to save Britain more than the current population.

I am just suggesting that we have more chance of winning a vote to get out of the EU by doing some groundwork (i.e. lobbying of all UK voters) first. That could take several years - but not as long as it would take for any east europeans currently in the UK to become British 'citizens'. As I wrote earlier - if there were a referendum now in the UK on EU membership - we might not win it: millions of voters have not had a leaflet from UKIP or heard from the party since May 2004 (and the latest opinion poll gives UKIP - the brand leader in anti-EU campaigning - a projected national vote share of just 1%). |
