As opinion polls in the UK continue to show overwhelming support for a referendum on the treaty, with the vast majority of people opposed to it, EU leaders are looking nervously towards the Republic of Ireland, the only country so far committed to a referendum now that the Danish government has backed away from the idea.

There is deep concern in Brussels that as Gordon Brown continues to deny Labour’s promise of a referendum on constitutional change, the Irish alone could sink the treaty because their vote will be a focus for its opponents across Europe.

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has already committed the party to supporting the Irish campaign against the treaty.

He said: “As was the case with the Maltese referendum on their entry to the EU, UKIP members will be encouraged to go to Ireland to help.”

Ireland’s own opposition campaign has been launched by the think-tank the Libertas Institute, which was founded by millionaire businessman Declan Ganley. He says the Irish people, as the only Europeans so far allowed a vote, have a duty to look very carefully at the treaty. Also opposing ratification is the broadly left-wing People’s Movement.

Prime Minister Bertie Ahern admits that the government cannot take anything for granted, given that a poll for The Irish Times shows more than 60% of people undecided on how they will vote.

EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso has intervened to remind the Irish of how much they have benefited since the Republic joined the EU in 1973, but there remain serious concerns about lack of democracy in the EU’s operations and the powers Ireland would be handing to Brussels, even though it has opted out of judicial co-operation.

Most of the EU money to the Irish Republic goes to areas outside Dublin.

Dublin (with about a third of the population of the Irish Republic) has done no better out of the EEC/EU than any British city.

The price the people of Ireland have had to pay to receive EU money is the loss of their sovereignty, national currency and control over the interest rate.

Their Government is now under the firm control of the EU.

Can somebody please explain to someone who is very slow to understand what is going on, why it is important for us to have a referendum?
The French and the Dutch were given referendums and responded with a resounding NO. Yet their leaders were still there signing up to the constitution yesterday. So what difference did it make?

Nope, I'm not calming down. I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

If the Irish don't wake the **** up, then BIT.CHES is exactly what they will be for a Loooooong time.

I don't blame them for taking the candy, but now they must realise what the game is and take action NOW!
