FORMER TORY COUNCILLOR IS UKIP ELECTION CANDIDATE
Be the first reader to comment on this story 11:00 - 13 October 2007 Former leading South Hams Tory councillor Jeff Beer is planning to fight the next general election for the UK Independence Party. Mr Beer, who is a sitting JP and was awarded the OBE for his services to law and order, has just been selected as the UK Independence Party's prospective parliamentary candidate for the Totnes Constituency.Mr Beer resigned from the Conservative Party earlier this year just before the May local election where he chose not to stand for re-election to South Hams Council where for years he had represented the Kingsbridge ward. When the next election is finally called he will end up in a ballot box battle with sitting Tory MP Anthony Steen and Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate and South Hams councillor Julian Brazil and whoever else throws their hat into the ring. Mr Beer said: "I am very pleased to have been selected as the UKIP PPC for the Totnes Constituency. "UKIP, with its clear position on withdrawal from the EU and its broad range of other policies, is an organisation which deserves extensive support. "I look forward to the next General Election and debate with the other political parties, all of whom support Britain's continuing subservience to the EU." Roger Knapman MEP, former leader of the party and a UKIP MEP for the South West Region was the UK Independence Party's candidate at the last general election. Mr Beer is also a fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society who has lived and worked in the Kingsbridge area for more than 30 years. He has had extensive business interests in the South West and now runs a property company. He also owns a farm in South Africa. He is married with four grown-up children. Mr Beer said he had resigned as a Tory after he became disillusioned with the present leadership, lack of policy and the ambiguous attitude of the Conservative Party to the European Union. Commenting on the selection, Peter Wyatt, chairman of the branch, said: "We are delighted to have Jeff on board as our PPC. He is a well known and respected figure in the constituency. Like many erstwhile Conservative voters, he has realised that the Conservative Party is simply not going to free Britain from the clutches of the EU, and re-establish us as the sovereign, self-governing nation that we should be." |
