If the Lib Dems decide to back a referendum in the House of Commons, the election promise made by Labour could become a reality.

After a debate with the Liberal Democracts’ Foreign Affairs spokesman, Michael Moore, UKIP deputy leader David Campbell Bannerman urged them to stand up for democracy.

"I call upon Michael Moore to put democracy and our British national interest before his party's allegiance to the European national interest," said Mr Campbell Bannerman.

"Liberal Democrat support for a referendum on the treaty could help defeat the government and ensure the British people have the vote they were promised.”

Mr Campbell Bannerman added: "The Treaty makes the EU a legal entity in its own right and is self-amending, so changes can be made in secret, away from the eyes of the public.

"It's time the Liberal Democrats showed us where their true loyalties lie: with the EU or with the British people."

The LibDems are the key to this, I think. If they could be persuaded to honour their General Election promise to support a referendum, then the vote in the House of Commons might be winnable. Unfortunately their current policy is no referendum, and both the contenders in their forthcoming leadership election support that policy.

For this reason, the Liberal Party's leader Steve Radford together with groups of Liberal volunteers are busy leafleting the various LibDem leadership hustings, urging the two candidates to do the honourable thing and support a referendum or else explain the reason why not. The word on the street is that many LibDems are pretty embarrassed by their party's current stance on this.

I agree with Tom, the numbers are not there in the HOC to win a vote on a referendum without the Lib Dems going into the aye lobby. William hague and David Davis have already indicated they will not win any vote.

The next Bye-election - where the LibDems are the lead party - then UKIP should launch a vociferous attack exposing the LibDems and their Euro-philia.

Instead of just attacking the tories UKIP need to box clever and change their tactics depending on the battle ground.

It would be interesting to see if this tactic would work.
