He is a UKIP member but sits as an Independent on the Council so he is not officially a UKIP Councillor, sorry to say.

or him
Peter McMillan, elected as a Conservative to Epping Forest district council, has left the group to sit as an Independent. There was no choice for his party colleague in Swindon borough council, Owen Lister, who has been expelled from the Conservative group as the party has learnt of his membership of the UK Independence Party.

What on earth for. If he's UKIP he's UKIP. What is it about being a member but not being able to promote it?

A sort of closet UKIP syndrome?

Some people regard party affiliation (to any party) as a hindrance to re-election.

It's not very honourable though is it. If you really think a party is that unpalatable to the public, then why be a member of that party? It seems like a cowards way out to me, trying to hide your membership of a party in order to con the electorate.

I think that's a bit harsh. I recall speaking to a couple of people in this position in UKIP and their stance was that their names carried some standing locally as councillors because they had originally been elected as independents. If they added 'UKIP' as their party, they felt that this would hinder their prospects as people have all kinds of associations with the brand. I presume that this would have applied to a certain extent no matter which party they signed up to, but UKIP's lack of electoral success must have magnified the risk.

So you can call them cowards if you wish, but until there are enough UKIP councillors to form a group, they are effectively independents anyway. Hence having the UKIP whip is largely irrelevant.

I totally accept the reasons why people choose not to keep the UKIP name. It is actually probably the smart move too, because it means they have a chance of winning and thus making a difference.

I am just too ideolistic for my own good. I beleive in standing up and stating what I beleive, which gets me into a lot of trouble. Hence I am probably the least capable politician on the planet.

That has been the case, I know. But with registration now, it is either UKIP or Independent on the ballot paper. I don't think Independents can be counted as UKIP councillors, even if they are members of the party.
