Default UKIP mentioned in BBC Television news report about Brown at EU Lisbon Treaty Summit

UKIP just got a mention on the BBC 1 Television news (at 10.14 pm) - BBC 'Europe' correspondent Mark Mardell said that the party was using a little known law to activate local parish council referendums on whether there should be a national vote on the EU 'Amending Treaty' (EU Constitution version 2). Film of people voting in one such parish referendum at East Stoke in Devon was shown.

Mark Mardell's report also broadcast an extract of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's remarks in Lisbon - where he has just arrived for the EU Summit on the 'Amending' Treaty - in which he (Gordon Brown) made the false claim that "50% of our trade is with the EU - millions of (British) jobs depend on successful trading arrangements with the EU."

The BBC report then showed a tent covered in the slogan "I want a referendum" positioned close to the EU Summit venue in Lisbon.

Trevor Colman of the Alliance for Referendums said in the report "The EU 'Amending Treaty' will mean the end of democracy in the UK - all decisions will be made by people in hte EU meeting in secret and who are unaccountable."

Default Lisbon, referendum, ballot paper

The tent (in Lisbon) I refer to in the posting above is in the shape and colour of a ballot box with the words "I want a referendum" written on it and a cross like the one voters put on their ballot paper (according to BBC 2 Television Newsnight a few minutes ago).

Good coverage for UKIP including German TV, 260 out of 273 votes for a referendum!

But the polls must be backed by local authorities and East Devon and Mid Devon District Councils have indicated they will not support any local poll.
This is a worrying development.

I posted a reply about it in their comments section.

The SW is still strong and leading the cause by organising this type of thing.

Well done.

I first posted here a few months ago about the discovery of this 1972 Act and can say I'm quite sure that Coucills do not have to "support" it,I believe if people follow the procedure in the Act the Council is obliged to comply with it.

I will take another look, later on.

Brings it out into the open and the Europhiles can do nothing about it.

Its a great tool for us to use if Eurosceptics.

Thank you for the very useful link, above, Kernow.

I have passed the information in the article (on the link) to a UKIP friend of mine who has no internet connection and who was enthused by the recent local referendum (on having an EU 'Treaty' referendum) at East Stoke in Devon.
