From what I've read about Ms Andreasen, she is one brave lady, so it's good news.

But - a couple of things bother me.

One - how the hell did this story come to be announced to the world by a TORY MEP of all people? What's going on there? More than a few people have posted insinuations on here that N Farage is just a little too close to D Hannan and one or two other Tories and this suggests they might be right. It shows a certain contempt for the membership who will be expected to cheer the news to the rafters in the conference hall (and we will, because Ms Andreasen deserves it), but even so apparently we are not considered worthy of being told about a major development in our own party before Tory MEPs.

Two - On Thursday morning the leader goes on the radio and announces that our top conference priority will be rolling out a five-year immigration ban, because EU membership has caused the biggest influx of migrants we have ever seen. Then we hear that at the same conference he will be rolling out our new Spanish accountant. Her nationality doesn't cause me a problem, but our hypocrisy might.

That's quite funny However, UKIP does make it clear that workers with jobs and housing would be permitted.

Presumably she will have to move to Britain to be able to do it effectively?

Marta Andreasen lives in Barcelona with her husband; she was born in Argentina. If she moves here that is good for UKIP, if not does it mean that our books will be taken back to Barcelona at the weekend?

I stand corrected on our membership numbers. 16500 is reasonably healthy for UKIP, although, if local experience is anything to go by, the majority will be retired and less than active. The total subscription wouldn't pay the finance director of a top 500 company, but is a couple of times what Marta earned in Brussels.

Just for your interest Martha is not the only UKIP luminary who lives abroad .

David Lott ex Chairman -France ,our ex editor of Ind News -Adrian Lithgow -France ,and last but not least Godfrey Bloom UKIP MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire - now resident in France !

Extraordinaire !

To come back to Martha A -having read the letters from the El Comm to our previous Treasurer -See Gimlet`s posting on Bown Nightec Case- thank goodness we now have her at the helm.

I am puzzled as to why she should take this on. Do you know:

Is Marta Andreasen a UKIP member?

Will she be paid to be our treasurer? If so, who will be her employer - the party? the MEPs? the IND/DEM group?

A treasurer living in Spain may have overall responsibility for the accounts, but obviously cannot look after day-to-day banking, checking permissibility of donors, etc. Who in this country will be doing this from the end of October when Bruce Lawson's resignation takes effect?

The Electoral Commission simply states the figures for the membership of parties as given by the parties!

I would like to know the real numbers for fee paying memberships of all political parties. I am not aware of plans by the EC to require auditable confirmation of claims of membership numbers. I suspect many claimed figures are over generous.

Regards, Andrew

Well, much as I admire Rustie, I wouldn't want to give the press exscuses for stories about cooking the books :-)

I've met our new treasurer and "Best of British" to her, I say!
