Well it looks like you are right - certainly in the short term there hasn't been any negative media treatment over it.

The sticking point will be whether the policy is too close to the BNP, thus making it harder for UKIP to defend against the "BNP-lite" or "BNP in blazers" criticisms in the future. There are many occasions when the two parties get lumped together and in the past this has always been unfair. Now that is going to be harder to argue against.

While the policy itself may appeal to voters, that good will could be undone if people perceive voting UKIP with being xenophobic or racist - labels that very few people would be happy to associate with themselves.

At the end of the day it's the votes that count - so the next local Council Candidate should have this as their central campaign theme - let UKIP HQ fund the campaign and get some MEPs to help out.

And then see if Joe Public are listening to UKIPs message.

It's not a completely fair measure though - local elections feature local issues as a major factor. UKIP's national immigration policy, while it may play a part, shouldn't really have anything to do with the local elections. Having said that, the national brand does influence voting to a large extent, but any measure will have to be looked at as an average, rather than individual local results.
