James Haintalf is just starting out
Default

A month is a long time in politics.

10 September 2007:

N Farage - "It is all very well demanding that all non-EU immigrants take a language test, but most non-EU immigration comes from the Commonwealth, such as Australia and India.

Indian doctors who already speak English will be forced to jump through hoops while Bulgarian doctors who don't will not."

4 October 2007:
UKIP policy announcement - No one should be admitted unless they are fluent in English

OK, I know Brown's language tests specifically are aimed at non-EU immigrants and Farage was saying that's not fair, but under UKIP's new proposals the English-speaking Indian doctors will still have to "jump through hoops". Apart from which, his argument in September was flawed, as very many Commonwealth migrants from places such as Pakistan and Bangladesh (who I would guess come in greater numbers than Australians) arrive with a good deal less English than many EU migrants.
