The anti-EU vote, if we are thinking of people who vote wholly or mainly on that issue, is extremely limited. People vote on a variety of factors (whether rational or otherwise - probably mostly the latter).

In my view, trying to campaign on a single cause is very good for motivating activists (the ones who are concerned with that issue above all else) but is bound to fail in electoral terms.

It would also mean bringing together people with diametrically opposed views. For example, those who believe in free trade and those who believe in protectionism have entirely different goals with respect to the EU, even though they may nominally both be inside the "anti-EU movement" (if it is even a movement).

Yes there is a Party Called the Democratic Party, run by Geoff Southall, however it has only ever contested ONE election, that was in London, Chelsea I think.

Certainly their London Activist Leo Brookes, left to join the English Democrats and is now the English Democrats London Chairman.

The Democratic Party, recieved a donation of circa £200,000 and spent it all on a court case to try to get the UK out of the EU through the English Courts.

Hardly a "Strong" party !

Thank you Kentishman. My main point was of course to establish that it may not be possible (going back to the subject of the thread) to have a party named British Democrats since there is already a Democratic Party registered.

You mention that Leo Brookes is your London Chairman, but I thought Andrew Constantine on this forum said he was London Chairman. Have I got that wrong?

I think the name is better than UKIP. Why not speak to this party's officials and see if they like UKIP? If they do, UKIP might wish to ask its members whether they would like to move to the new name? In future, "new UKIP" might want to put these sorts of major proposals to the membership - having the word "democrat" in your new name will require you to have the occasional nod in the general direction of democracy!

And as for Leo Brookes ... he is the very hard working and able Secretary to the London Area for the English Democrats. We couldn't do without him, so no, you cannot have him back!

I feel that the name British Democrats is a wise and media friendly name. It is simple and easy to understand who we are and what we believe in. I feel that someone should seriously suggest this name to the NEC and try to instigate a referendum in the party.

That is true, but it is also seems a little cliche. It isn't exactly original.

Indeed it is. But I think if we are going for a name change it should be something radical, yet sound like it belongs in the heart of British politics.

Who could put it to the NEC and get a vote by members. UKIP talk about promoting referendums and direct democracy - lets start here. Maybe the party could go somewhere, it needs a big change before the next election if it is to win any seats. A name change and fresh ideas could bring people like myself and others to join.
