I'm getting scrollbars 'cause I have less than the viewable space (I have a
widescreen laptop [1280x600] which is what I was using). However the viewable area of the holding page could easily fit in that.

Actually, I can understand the reasoning behind that last block. Sometimes you want the semantics without the default styling. It's good practice to stick anything that is emphasis in either an em or strong element.
