Default The smoking ban

Why is UKIP wasting its time backing repeal of the smoking ban? Those of us forced in the past to breathe in the cancer causing stink say bring the ban on.

UKIP policy is that the ban should not be imposed, but rather the choice of whether an establishment is smoking or non-smoking should be left to the owner/landlord.

I am a non-smoker and would much prefer not to have to breathe in other peoples smoke, but i would be quite happy if i could go somewhere non smoking.

1) It infringes on the rights of private propery owners - it should be up to owners whether people may smoke or not on THEIR premises. 2) What's wrong with the current status quo of segregated smoking/no smoking areas?

What you suggest Harry is the most sensible way to deal with this issue, I do not smoke, dont like breathing in anyone elses so would go to a no smoking venue, or ensure I sat in a part of a venue that was reserved for non smoking as most have such a facility.

The smoking ban is interference in the extreme, I have respect for the arguments about health but people should have a choice made available to them.

I'm a non-smoker but it is all about freedom of choice

The way that this government and the opposition are going no one will be able to argue with them as that will also be banned

As a heavy smoker 40+ a day for 40 years who managed to give up 7 years ago, I totally agree with the ban and I think this would be the majority of people smokers and non smokers!

Ah, but Kernow the point you have made is in support of "the tyranny of the majority". Is it any more right that 80% of people can impose their will on the other 20% than those 20% can impose theirs on the 80%? Why?

Leaving the choice to the market ensures "unanimity without conformity" (i.e. everybody is satisifed without having to accept the same solution) whereas conflict resolution through the democratic process ensures "conformity without unanimity".

As i have previously said, i would love to be able to sit in a smoke free environment. And i know many smokers would like the ban as it would give them the kick to quit. However if so many people feel this way then an establishment would be wise to ban smoking for the gain of the extra business it would receive. I also think that smoking will continue to be seen as increasingly unacceptable and gradually most, if not all, establishments will become non smoking.

Nigel Farage smokes and he is upset by this new law so he has decided all by himself it will be UKIPs official policy to be against this ban.
