Newton Abbot lies within Teignbridge District Council and hosts the Head Office of the UK Independence Party. So I/we might expect a reasonable campaign from UKIP for many of the seats up for election this year, as all Teignbridge seats are up for election. Sadly there is only 1 UKIP candidate for the local elections - Trevor Colman for Bishopsteignton ward.

I'm glad to hear that they at least made a very serious effort to find other candidates in the district, even if those efforts were unsuccessful this time. I'm also glad to see a decent number of UKIP candidates in some of the other Devon districts and boroughs. The only serious cloud is the absence of any candidate for North Devon District Council, where UKIP won a seat in 2003. We must learn to build on our successes.
Still, prospects look good in many parts of Devon. I stick to my opinion that Devon offers UKIP's best chance of a major breakthrough. The general election results there were very encouraging. |

UKIP got a very good result in the Boston constituency in Lincolnshire at the last General Election (the best UKIP constituency result in the country I believe) and the party got one of its highest shares of the vote in the country in Lincolnshire in the EU Election of 2004.
So perhaps Lincolnshire should be up there with Devon as a target county for UKIP. |

I've always liked Devon people. They've always seemed so nice, not like the many grotty aggressive selfish folk in London (that's a generalization - not anywhere near all Londoners are waiting on the street corner desperate to knife you and pinch your pennies, and to be fair almost all big cities are fraught with these big-city problems).
If they hate the Evil Union then that's just a bonus. 8) |

Britannist, I agree about Boston, Lincs, being a promising area for UKIP. Another strong area for UKIP is Hartlepool, largely thanks to the efforts over several years of the excellent Cllr Steve Allison. This was of course the location of UKIP's only gain in the 2006 local elections.
Happily, I see that another third of Hartlepool Borough Council is up for election this year. UKIP is contesting 8 of the 16 wards: http://www.hartlepool.gov.uk/site/sc...php?newsID=775 Fingers crossed for a good result! |

UKIP does seem to be avery 'coastal' party? Is that right? Most of its strong areas - Hartlepool, Boston, Devon - all seem to be past or present maritime communities. Maybe it's a generalisation, maybe a coincidence?
