The public wants the monarchy. They may not love all the Royals but they still (rightfully) respect Her Majesty.

It must be marginally possible, but I would be surprised if Charles did anything meaningful about the EU.

Whoever wins the next GE, whether it be Lib/Lab or Con, they are all pro EU and as the Government is in charge of the Monarchy and not the reverse, Prince Charles will not dish the dirt publicly on the EU! Privately I expect he hates the ********!

I suspect the Royal family all hate the EU, they have no role in it. But for the Queen to speak out would mean the Monarchy involved in politics, personally I think that is very dangerous ground.

Burglars steal Prince's letters attacking EU
By Daniel Foggo
Last Updated: 10:11pm BST 18/05/2002

Special Branch is investigating the theft of confidential letters written on the Prince of Wales's behalf to an MEP, in which the heir to the throne is said to express strong anti-EU sentiments.

The correspondence, which was signed for Prince Charles by a private secretary, was taken during a burglary on Thursday night at the offices of Nigel Farage, an MEP and a member of the UK Independence Party.

It is understood that the letters condemned the destructive effects that European Union laws have had on Britain's agriculture and manufacturing industry.

One missive is said to bewail the effects of EU regulations on small producers of British cheese. In another the Prince allegedly decries the red tape surrounding the slaughter of animals, which has helped to force many abattoirs out of business.

The Prince's lack of support for European legislation is clear in the letters. Prince Charles is known to hold reservations privately about Britain's involvement in Europe, and he was recently reported to have told a dinner party guest that he would not mind if Britain left the EU completely.

He has also lamented that the building of the Channel Tunnel has left Britain no longer an island.

In public, however, he is constrained by the convention preventing members of the Royal Family from making political statements.

Mr Farage said last night that he was worried that the letters, which had been signed by a private secretary on the Prince's behalf, might be used to embarrass the Royal Family.

"This has put me in a very difficult position because what people have said in letters is not necessarily what they are able to put their name to in public," he said last night.

"The people involved, who include some very well connected people indeed, might be somewhat embarrassed if they were to suddenly surface."

The letters were being stored on computer disk, which was taken together with almost £10,000 worth of technological hardware from the office in Lyminster, West Sussex. The burglars smashed a padlock and broke through double oak doors to gain entry.

The missing data includes a list of mobile telephone numbers for leading politicians of all parties, including Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, and many members of the shadow cabinet.

Mr Farage, MEP for South-East England, said: "Whether this was a routine burglary or whether there was a more sinister motive is impossible to tell. The office is very isolated."

A spokesman for Prince Charles said: "We cannot comment on private correspondence."

Charles is now converting me into a Royalist. These things don't just slip out into the media!

Do we at last have a Royal with the nads to stand up and fight for his country and people again?

We may have but the problem for HRH is when he becomes King, I think it was Channel 4 that recently did a program on Prince Charles suggesting his outspokeness made him unsuitable for the role of King. HRH quickly issued a statement saying that the role of Prince of Wales and King were very diffrent and the HRH was mindful of the monarchs duty to stay politically nuetral and would do so when on the throne.

Not to me it isn't. I want to hear what the King or Queen bellieves, as long as they don't try and force their way. I hate the thought of people being gagged.

The above break-in story was five years ago, and Charles has been pretty quiet on the EU since then.
