Default Riddell, UKIP and the Conservative Party

Yes, there are an amazing number of anti-UKIP articles in the press lately. It looks like it is being orchestrated deliberately by europhiles in the Conservative Party.

Riddell is what used to be known as a 'wet'. He has long been pro-EU.

Default Europhiles in the Conservative Party worried about UKIP

I think UKIP has got the europhiles in the Conservative Party worried. Last week's YouGov poll puts UKIP on 7% in the English Midlands/Wales (5% nationally).

All these predictions that UKIP posed no threat to the Conservatives were made before the last General Election. In the event - according to the Bruges Group - UKIP and Veritas took enough anti-EU Votes from the Conservatives to cost the Conservatives victory in 27 parliamentary constituencies.

My understanding now is that the expectation is that at the next General Election UKIP could cost the Conservatives victory in FIFTY parliamentary constituencies.

And that's quite apart from the fact that the Conservatives could lose some seats which they only one because Labour narrowly lost them because anti-Iraq 'war' protest votes went to the third place Liberal Dims in those Labour-Tory marginals. If Labour gets those votes back from the Liberal Dims, some of those seats won by the Conservatives from Labour last time could return to the Labour fold.

The EU/UKIP (directly) and Iraq (indirectly) are two issues which will be very important factors for Conservative candidates at the next General Election.

The print article is accompanied by a large photo of Farage in campaigning mode.

So thanks to their picture editor for a positive spin to counter the article (without meaning to presumably).

The picture of Mr. Farage (quite a good photograph I would say) can be seen on the link I have just given in the last posting to this thread.
