Default Leftist pro-EU Tory MP dismisses UKIP as 'just plain wrong'

Pro-EU Conservative MP Damien Green has defended David Cameron, the anti-UKIP leader of the Conservative Party for moving the Conservative Party to the 'centre' (i.e. further left in the direction of Blair and Labour) and has dismissed those who disagree with 'project Cameron' like UKIP or Edward Leigh MP (head of the pro-Thatcher Cornerstone group of Conservative MPs) as being "just plain wrong."

Mr. Green was a guest on GMTV (on ITV 1 Television) today at 7.10 am.

Presenter Steve Richards (a columnist on the europhile Independent newspaper) asked Damien Green "Why are you (the Conservative Party) behind in the opinion polls? Why are you not doing better?"

Damien Green replied "We (the Cameron-led Conservative Party) have steady growth. But it is a long process and I always thought it would be. We are doing better now than at any time that I have been an MP over the last ten years. David Cameron is right to move to the centre ground."

Steve Richards then pointed out "You have the threat from Edward Leigh MP who made the strongest criticism of David Cameron so far (from within the Conservative Party) and you have the threat from UKIP.

Damien Green insisted "People with those arguments (the arguments of UKIP and the Cornerstone Group) are wrong. We didn't lose the last three General Elections for not being too right wing. People want Government to sit in the centre of politics. Those arguing for David Cameron to change are just plain wrong."

* Damien Green is an MP at Ashford in Kent - within the 'euro' constituency of Nigel Farage MEP, leader of UKIP.

* The term 'centre' (as spoken in the interview above) is used by pro-EU politicians - what they really mean is 'pro-EU'.

Britannist adds: Interviewer Steve Richards failed to ask Mr. Green about the collapse of support for the Cameron-Conservatives in local By-Elections in recent weeks. He also did not ask about last week's YouGov poll putting Conservative support down and UKIP support up to its highest level in an opinion poll (5% nationally - 7% in the English Midlands and Wales) for some time. Steve Richards also did not ask Damien Green about the fact that, according to the Daily Mirror last week, David Cameron's personal poll rating has slumped from +14 to -9 in just 12 months (he became leader of the Conservative Party 14 months ago).

Great, so we get a choice of what political, economic and social direction the Government takes us then!

The reason the tories lost the last 3 general elections is because they lost
their reputation for financial competence after Lamont and Major tried to track the ERM and interest rates went up and down like Edwina Curries knickers.

It didn't help when Major promoted ministers people like Currie, Widecombe, Yeo and Gummer who just couldn't cope.

The fact that they didn't then attack and oppose the grandoise lunacies of nulab only finished them off.

Nulab has only survived thus because of what the World Bank made Lamont and his successors do in the treasury and Gordon the Moron has pi55ed away the lot

No we don't, and the public are increasingly seeing through that now. That's why, IMO, the 'other' parties are now showing at about 10% in the polls. (with UKIP on about 5% now)
