Is the Conservative party's full title not The Conservative & Unionist Party?

Unfortunately they didn't tell us that by Unionist they meant European Unionist!

I think the word Unionist has meant different things to different Tories! Some saw it as being "One Nation" in that they were classless.

The Unionists of Scotland, N Ireland, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham had mass Working Class support right up to the the late 1960's.
The Middle Class Conservatives like Heath and Thatcher became ashamed of this support and dropped all traditional Unionist policies.

To this day a Unionist party if launched and built on the ideology of the founder of the Unionist movement Joe Chamberlain could be a massive popular force.

I understand there is a National Liberal Party knocking about the place.

I wonder if a Liberal Unionist Party will appear?

At one point in the mid-1990's I thought the Third Way would have become an English Nationalist Party but they didnt.
I suppose National Liberalism is a logical conclusion of their movement.
But it's National Social Liberal not National Classical Liberalism which the Freedom party in Austria tried and then lost it's working class support.

Yes.
I would be amazed if the NLP,TW promoted Classical Liberalism.

[I have had a quick check and a Liberal Unionist Party has popped up!]

Liberal Unionist Party http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Unionist_Party
National Liberal Party http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...Party_%28UK%29

Liberal Unionist Party today http://www.electoralcommission.org.u...pe=partydetail
National Liberal Party today http://www.electoralcommission.org.u...pe=partydetail

These two re-incarnations would probably not attract those in the original parties!

Here is a report in the Belfast Telegraph (Wed 14) about the Assembly elections:

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/ne...cle2268754.ece

Not much new information. Of UKIP, it says:

Quote:
Apart from the heavy hitters - the DUP alone fielding 46 candidates - there is a high level of Independents on both the unionist and nationalist sides.

And with increased independents potentially splitting the vote, a number of other parties - including the Conservatives, the Green Party and the UK Independence Party - will be hoping to make a breakthrough.
