BASILDON BOY is just starting out
Default Article in Wales on Sunday about new UKIP Chairman

http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0100n...name_page.html

By Matt Withers

CONGRATULATIONS to John Pratt, elected last week as the new leader of the Welsh branch of the UK Independence Party.

Mr Pratt replaces Richard Suchorzewski, who quit the party last year after failing to win the leadership and accusing his former colleagues of being "scoundrels" who had spread false rumours he was a gay BNP supporter.

Mr Pratt, from Powys, keeps Welsh black cattle and, as a farmer, receives subsidies from the European Union under the Common Agricultural Policy. Indeed, last year - the first year such figures were made public - he received £8,808.

So presumably, as a leading light in a party whose sole reason to exist is withdrawal from the EU, Mr Pratt must have refused the money on principle?

"I'm totally opposed to European subsidies," he insists when this column calls.

"As far as I'm concerned we should look towards managing our own system. We pay a heavy price for subsidies being put into agriculture."

Er...so you don't take it, then?

"I'm not a big subsidy taker," he says. "Some are taking £70, 80, 90,000. And I'll tell you why I have to accept it - because whether or not I do I'm tied to the rules. I consider if they want to impose their rules on us they have to pay us for it."

He also brushes off criticism from within his own party which have appeared on the internet, including murmurings about the fact that, in the modern age, he has no access to the web and has not fully embraced the opportunities technology brings.

Mr Pratt responds: "I have secretaries doing all my work for me. Anything I wish to distribute on the e-mails or on the webs [sic] I'll ask and it will be done."

So that's all right, then.

I haven't seen any such murmurings on the internet. Are there any links that support that newspaper statement?

I think that you are confusing 'Gay' with 'Welsh'.
