Yes, me too. It should certainly buy a lot of leaflets!
The thing about all these defections is that each one increases UKIP's credibility with other potential Tory defectors. The worry for Cameron must be that some sort of tipping point may eventually be reached, at which anti-EU Tories start transferring to UKIP en masse. |

And then there's the money factor too. Some reports say the Conservative Party's membership is down about 6000. But I read nearly 16000 in an article published by the Telegraph just after Christmas. If the 16000 figure is correct - that's about £300, 000 per year (probably more) lost in membership fees (with friends and political allies of those who have resigned from the Conservative Party likely to follow). Plus all the voluntary work - as the people quitting both Labour and the Conservatives seem to be the most politically active. The Cameron-led Conservatives are down 3% in today's poll in the Guardian - and most of that support has gone to the Liberal Dims. The very party David Cameron has aimed to get votes from at the expense of losing some Conservative members to UKIP. They're leaving the Conservatives for UKIP and equivalent numbers to replace them in the Conservative Party have failed to materialise. Which is exactly what I, and several others on this forum, predicted a year ago (when David Cameron became Conservative leader). |
