Free thinker

The Rev Peter Mullen, Chaplain to the Stock Exchange and Rector of St Michael's, Cornhill, has graced this column several times in recent months.

First he wrote The Politically Correct Gospel, subsequently expanding the idea into a politically incorrect Christmas service, complete with use of the King James Bible and the 1662 prayer book.

Now he's taking the campaign still further – by joining the UK Independence Party. "I am joining Ukip because I refuse to believe that we should be governed by the EU," he says. "It's no good anyone banging on about national independence when they are not prepared to allow us to govern ourselves."

Taking a swipe at the political establishment, he adds: "Why should I vote for self-serving careerists when I can vote for a party of recognisable British principle?"

St Michaels Cornhill is no ordinary church , when it is not in use as a place of worship it regularly has speakers on all sorts of topics including the EU .
So we are very lucky to have such an influential and savvy cleric on board.

Default EU den of vipers

The Rev. Mullen (who has joined UKIP as detailed in the report above) will be pleased to learn that he is not the only man of the cloth to support UKIP . This is from my file:

Following the success of the anti-EU UK Independence Party at the EU Elections in June 2004, an anti-EU vicar has held a special Sunday service in which he thanked God for the EU Election results (in which the UK Independence Party (UKIP) polled well on 10.6.2004).

The Rev. Philip Foster said UKIP’s success showed the tide was turning and the europhiles could be beaten 8) . The Rev. Foster wrote to the Congregation of St. Matthew’s Church, Cambridgeshire, inviting them to the thanksgiving service as a sign of God’s mercy on our country.

The invitation was printed in the official colours of the UK Independence Party – purple and gold.

The vicars sermon included a message of support to UKIP’s 12 MEP’s “Pray God will give them courage – they will move into a den of vipers” (meaning the EU  , of course).

Well of course the EU's colours, gold and blue, are the offical colours of the Virgin Mary - the original plan of the council of Europe, when they designed their flag was to show that all good European Catholics were under her protection...
