NEC report

A summary of the main issues considered at the meeting of the National Executive on Monday 8 January is as follows.

Election to the NEC

Procedures for electing four new members of the NEC were discussed, beginning with an invitation for nominations in the January issue of Independence News.

Regional committees

The party rules governing regional committees are to be revised in order to provide some definition of the functions of these committees outside Euro-election periods. It was agreed that they should act as a forum for communication between the region’s MEP(s), the regional organiser and the membership. There was also a need to clarify the rules for selecting delegates to regional committees.

Policy development

David Campbell Bannerman advised the meeting that manifestos for local elections and for the Scottish and Welsh elections are nearing completion. He reported that he had received a good response to his request for volunteers to serve on policy working groups.

Election campaigns

In a written report, the campaigns director expressed disappointment at the party’s failure to contest a number of council by-elections. This matter will be raised at a meeting with regional organisers on January 22.

Youth organisation

In order to develop a youth wing for the party, it is proposed to seek an individual who will be responsible for its administration. Whilst falling under the control of the National Executive, the youth wing should have its own autonomous steering committee and be granted the freedom to develop its own initiatives.

Membership fees

A proposal to raise subscriptions for membership of the party was debated but there were differing views and a final decision was deferred.

New UKIP Peers

The party leader advised the meeting that Lord Pearson of Rannoch and Lord Willoughby de Broke had announced their decision to join the party.
