Up to 160 members of the UK Independence Party in Plymouth were set to quit en masse tonight in protest at the way it is being run.
12 is 'up to' 160!

So the real headline is.

12 people burned their cards and formed "The Battle For Britain" in disgust at a UKIP branch. In the meantime the branch has now got fresh leadership and is looking forward to the parties new Lords helping them build for the future.

Slightly less doom laden than was painted in the first instance.

Can you imagine a Branch Chairman of any other Party being allowed to announce the closure of their Branch? Maybe we should get a few moles into Sedgefield Labour Party and then they could leave and announce their departure under the Headline "Blair's Local Labour Party Collapses"

A very small group of less than 12 members have resigned out of the total membership of 160.

Party acting general secretary Piers Merchant said: "Under our constitution there is a formal process for opening and closing branches. This branch has definitely not been closed and there is no intention for that to happen. Our members in Plymouth want to continue their activities. The city remains important for us."
This is good work - I think it is what the old parties call "rapid rebuttal". I'm pleased to see somebody has taken a grip on the Plymouth situation so quickly.

It will be fun to see how they do against an invigorated and vengeful ukip, come the May locals.
The fact that this and many other embarrassments have come at times that tend to take the shine off good news days suggest some planning.
It has not worked, I am having a great day. Two lords and the BBC liars shot down.
Nigel is performing Heroic deeds, and I am glad to say I was wrong in my choice for leader. I think it is all coming together. Onward and upward

Default Activists

Probably the 12 who resigned were the branch activists, in most branches only a tiny proportion of memers are active. Some of this is due to age and is understandable, however, many more people join without the slighest intention of doing a hands turn the help the branch. It will be interesting to see if some of the non-active members in Plymouth now get off their bums and fill the vacant branch positions. I won't be holding my breath.

I'm quite sure that out of well over 100 people some will be willing to step forward. Even if no one wants to do it for the right reason a few people who never thought they would get anyway would probably like a little bit of power.

We have lost a few more nutcases, one of whom 'phoned Trixy during the leadership campaign and threatened to break her legs (this is not, shamefully enough, an uncommon thing for her to have to put up with; I have taken some of the calls myself).

**** them: they are the kind of ***** that we are well rid of frankly. No one that has left since Nigel took over has been anyone that I would miss.

Default Party over for UKIP in Plymouth

BBC South West Ceefax 162:

Plymouth members of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) are to keep the branch afloat ...
UKIP said on Wednesday that the branch would continue under Acting Chairman Bill Wakeham.'

ITV West Country Teletext 338:

' 'Troubled' Ukip branch remains open
A Devon branch of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) is still operating ... the party has said
... acting general secretary Piers Merchant said: "This branch has definitely not been closed." '
