ALLAN J PHILLIPS is just starting out
Default DAME VERA DEFENDS THE POST OFFICE

According to the Daily Express, singer Dame Vera Lynn who is now in her 88th year, is supporting the protest aimed at persuading ministers of the vital role played by post offices across the country.

Dame Vera is reported as saying how ridiculous it is that government is axing post offices when they provide such an important service, especially to the elderly. She says she uses her local post office almost every day. It is not just a place to buy stamps but is a local focal point with so much to offer.

Lots of elderly people retire to the country for obvious reasons. If local post offices are lost it would be a struggle for many senior citizens.

Post offices like so many other areas are being subjected to bureaucratic and dictatorial changes connected with EU rules and deliberately run down to give credence to so-called reforms.

Even TV licence fees can no longer be paid into Post Offices. This is the BBC's decision.

Payment of pensions at post offices has over the years been a relatively simple task, but from 2010 pensions will be paid into banks. This means that a bank account will be compulsory or maybe supermarkets will take over post office services. Either way it will be a great inconvenience to many pensioners.

What I am concerned about here is the fact that the postmaster at the Sunbury Road, Northfield, Birmingham says that the cutbacks have nothing to do with the EU. Is it possible that even most Members of Parliament do not fullly understand what is going on? We have plenty to do in the New Year. With best wishes, Allan Phillips.

Was it? Does anyone have info on how the decision that licence contract should go to Capita was made?

Re Dame Vera: Good on her - will she join UKIP? - at her age she surely can't be worrying about the effect on her career (?)
