Default Annabelle Fuller letter in Western Mail & etc.

SIR - Busy as I am, out of the kindness of my heart I will give Armund Watts ("Ukip canvasses for members by email", Dec 2) a quick politics lesson.

His comment that "Joining Ukip would be like joining the BNP except you would be expected to wear cravats and blazers to meetings" shows a high level of ignorance that, admittedly, many of us have come to expect from representatives of the "Big Three".

Firstly, Ukip is a libertarian, non-racist, non-sectarian party which believes in democracy, free markets, rights for the individual and free global trade. This is in diametrical opposition to the BNP, which is a socialist party, and thinks that colour and race are the most important think in British politics, and who haven't quite got to grips with even the most basis economics.

The fact that Ukip wants to withdraw from the statist, anti-democratic European Union, whose trade and development polices have caused misery and poverty to millions in the developing world does not make it a "racist party".

Miss ANNABELLE FULLER
Queen Annes Gate, London
I agree with everything she wrote.

Welcome to the Backbencher, Guardian Unlimited's weekly insider's guide to Westminster. ...

Poor Nigel Farage! Even the arrival of hundreds of thousands of hard-working Poles hasn't delivered the boost the Ukip leader had hoped for as he tries to put clear yellow water between himself and the New Tories. "Dear Councillor," he wrote to a Labour councillor last week. "There does not seem to be very much difference between our three main parties these days." Mmm. "With the local elections in May we intend to build up on local government representation and would welcome a conversation with anyone that might consider working with us or joining us." Anyone, Nigel? Anyone? "It is time to stand up and be counted." Well, quite. If you'd like to defect to a small and virtually powerless Europhobic party, you can email Nigel "on a completely confidential basis" at nigel.farage@europarl.europa.eu.
You'd think they would know that thousands of councillors have been contacted not just one. I think Annabelle Fuller will now have to write yet another letter pointing out that UKIP is not remotely Europhopic :!:

As long as the Grauniad attacks you, you know you are doing something right.

i agree with much of what she said.

One mistake though, in no sense whatsoever is the BNP a socialist party.

Um... Yes it is. It is very left. Even further left than the Conservatives

I'm not a libertarian. Whenever some organisation claims to be libertarian, you can bet there is a gay running it. I've had libertarianism up to here.

I think free marketeering is over-rated too.

This obsession with the market is why we have the crappiest schools, hospitals, and public transport this side of Mars.

Yes and no, in my view. Free markets are OK for much of people's needs, but most of the above are bogus - they are disguised state control, often to benefit private firms in "partnership" or to enhance political control outside open accountability.
