Default EXTENDING THE ROLE OF REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES

EXTENDING THE ROLE OF REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES

A recently published discussion paper, prepared for the English Regions Network, by Regeneris Consulting, presents proposals for extending and strengthening the role of regional assemblies. The paper will be presented as a contribution to the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review's sub-national review of economic development and regeneration early next year.

The paper says that regional assemblies have proved their worth in making regional development agencies accountable for the decisions they make, the way they spend their money and the results they achieve. It argues that regional assemblies should be given the power to scrutinise a wide range of public bodies. This role could be extended to embrace other
non-departmental public bodies including learning and skills councils.

It also sets out a case for the development regional Public Service
Agreements as forms of multi-area agreements.

The paper is available at: http://www.ern.gov.uk/page.asp?id=14

After all of that is in place, one wonders what we will need Westmister for... Clearly that museum status looms larger and larger

As UKIP has no plan or campaign for regional assemblies it should switch policy 180 degrees, accept they are here to stay, and demand they be elected by PR so UKIP gets seats on them t to work in the system for a pro democracy agenda.

Bring down the present smooth operation of just one Regional Assembly and we will have the whole Communist European Union staggering on the ropes in this fight,it's by far the most devestating blow that can be landed on the body of the CEU.

Not attacking these Regional Assemblies means not being serious about getting rid of the Communist European Union and the leaches who are attached to it,IMHO.

It will be hard ever getting the general public to give a toss about these things.

Steve Allison says the same. His view is that with assemblies elected under PR, UKIP would win seats. Not only would it give us a platform (and funds), we could prove our principles by voting the assembly out of existence. This would be a significant step and show we are a party of principle worth voting for.

On the other hand, the money wasted and tangled law would take a long time to undo.

If thats the UKIP Plan they will lose even more members.

The NE voted 78% against the Assembly,to turn around and join it would bring more than a bit of ridicule on us thats for sure.

Who comes up with such ideas like this in UKIP?

I think you're safe. UKIP do not want to change tack and Steve conceded that it isbetter to fight the assemblies. His point was simply that it would have done us a favour had the vote in the NE been in favour. His arguement being that that UKIP should have campaigned for a YES vote on the basis a NO vot would keep the UNELECTED assembly. Better to be elected than unelected.

But i agree we should be fighting hard to get rid of the assemblies. The last sitting i attended i met a coupel of councillors who were veyr sceptic. I asked one why we needed regional assemblies, his respone was "We don't!"

I'd rather UKIP stuck to principles, rather than becoming like the old mob and playing stupid games for short term political expediency.
