UKIP needs seats in Westminster, not more bloody books that no one will buy!

Presumably this means that Cranks and Gadflies is now only semi-tolerated by the centre.

It was certainly a warts and all book, and in my opinion the personal opinions of the author became rather tedious.

A man with a somewhat chequered career, let it be said.

Haven't read the new one yet, but I thought Cranks and Gadflies was an enjoyable read.

Sort of...

I was asked to write a review of it.

Dr Peter Gardner is a very erudite man. I have known him for a number of years and we shared a radio studio during the GE (I fought Witney, Peter fought Oxford East). Peter has been in UKIP since the early days and will have carried out his research thoroughly.

Whilst we need Westminster seats these are won in different ways. There are people who read a lot of political material - this year I have read the Life of William Pitt, the life of Tom Paine, the life of Younghusband, the story of the Irish cranks and gadflies Clann na Poblachta (they brought down de Valera), One Palestine Complete and I am reading 'How to Label a Goat'. If we have no literature those who want to read about us cannot. It is possible that the book will lose us votes, but it is also possible that people who want to understand how UKIP got to be in the position it is today will read it. Everybody is different, some want to go beyond the Mail and Telegraph for deeper insights.

Peter Gardner ought to be congratulated. Writing a well researched book is no easy task.

Sounds like the business, Aardvark.

We should never forget that despite all its ups and downs UKIP has achieved a success which no other minor party has ever been able to equal. That is a matter of interest to all serious students of politics, no matter what they may personally think of the party.

Cranks and Gadflies is OK as tittle-tattle but totally unworthy to be treated as a serious work of research. Hopefully the opening for such a work has now been filled.

I'll have to see if I can get another free review copy.
