Default everybody laughs

From local press in the North East, nice one Stphen......

*********************************************

Dear Editor,

According to Fiona Hall, the North East Liberal Democrat MEP (and member of the African Caribbean Pacific-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly), everybody laughs when they hear it’s in Barbados, The “it” in question being a five-day trip to the Caribbean, costing taxpayers more than £200,000. MEPs will be departing this weekend and “slumming it” in the Colony Club, located in seven acres of palm-filled gardens on a glorious stretch of Caribbean beach. Normal rates range from $357 to $657 a night.

The trip to discuss water shortages, aid and African Caribbean Pacific-European Union trade policies kicks off with a cruise aboard a ship reported to have the longest floating bar in the Caribbean. Workshops on offer include one on the rum industry. MEPs will be receiving a goody bag containing rum and other Bajan specialities.

The packed programme includes water sports and a trip to the “eighth wonder of the world”, Harrison’s Cave, a ¾-mile-long limestone cavern. An EU spokesman declined to give details of the rest of the entertainment because he claimed it could give the wrong impression. Despite the free hospitality, MEPs are entitled to claim a further £90 a day in expenses.

The twice yearly meetings rotate between Europe, Africa and the Caribbean and have become renowned for lavish treatment of MEPs. The 70 members expected in Barbados will be accompanied by 84 officials, including 30 interpreters. Nice work if you can get it, especially given the current north east weather. Can you hear everyone laughing?

I wish our local press would print stuff like this. If it doesn't mention Woking or at least somewhere near by, it's almost impossible to get letters in.

Then again, they are all Lib Dem loving rags round here.

Does anybody know if any other UK MEPs are involved with this group?

Or are any other UK MEPS in other junkety organisations?

Could be a good expose at the appropriate time.

Do we know which paper it was in. If I can find that out, I will send it to my local paper which is very good at anti EU letters.
