A small extract (I've removed some language so it won't offend the moderation policy!) from a piece which comments on Iain Dale's thoughts on his interview with Nigel. |

Member Posts: 343 Re: UKIP the future « Reply #37 on: Today at 02:55:48 AM » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote from: Leicester on Yesterday at 11:18:57 PM With the income from the euro elections and the big donners why have they continued to do so poor at local elections and the general election where there results were embarrasing. Agree you may do well again at the euros but you will not do better than last time, thats if your stilla round in 2009 as i hear there is so much unrest in the party (thats if the rumours are true) Why have UKIP done poorly at First Past The Post elections but done well under PR? Might I suggest that it's not JUST to do with the fact that euro-elections are single-issue elections? Also: 1. The electoral system 2. UKIP puts 90% of its money into the European elections 3. The media gives us a lot more coverage at European election time than at any other time. I hear more rumours of unrest in UKIP now than before. However, most of the troublemakers have left. Remember that UKIP membership was about 7,000 at the corresponding point in the elections cycle 5 years ago. And finally, I'm not "talking up" UKIP. Actually, I think Darren's about right. I think that UKIP will do somewhere between 1999 (3 MEPs) and 2004 (12 MEPs) next time. I would expect us to keep something in the region of 6-9 seats in 2009 as things stand at the moment. UKIP are certainly more organised and better funded now than in 1999, and are established and known to be capable of winning seats at European elections. THE ABOVE QUOTE TAKEN FROM VOTE 2006 DISCUSSION FORUM! As a lapsed member but strong supporter of UKIP it drives me insane when I see members writing on public websites that we will win only half the Euro seats we won in 2004. This is foolish behaviour. |

I am growing in optimism of late.
1) A definite broad based approach is now forming. 2) Press coverage is much better. 3) More and more stories of rising membership numbers. 4) More and mroe people saying the old parties are the same. I think UKIP are THE anti-EU party, thus will do better in the Euros. It's the other elections that I am interested and more concerned about. Locals next year will be key and the amount of people UKIP get to run.

Another angle on this from a comment under the article at the top of the thread:

Well, quite.
UKIP needs to become a lot more professional in its dealings -- both within and without the party itself. I have been helping out with some research suff and advice on the blog aspect (as has at least one other very high-profile blogger). However, it is happening. It irritates me when I see people attacking the party on the grounds that it simply reinforces the general opinion that UKIP is full of squabbling loons. That, in itself, damages the main impact that the party can have and that, in turn, sets the cause of EUscepticism back each time. It is that which we should concentrate on, not petty factional arguments. What one commenter at The Kitchen has called my "Chinese water torture" method of plugging UKIP has already recruited at least 3 people to the party (that I know of) and I have had a huge number of emails (though why they should email me is something of a mystery), since writing the piece referred to above, from people offering their time and skills to UKIP.
