Default Common sense prevails in hollow victory

http://www.ukip.org/ukip_news/gen12.php?t=1&id=2731

Quote:
The European Parliament has narrowly voted in favour of allowing the continued use of mercury in barometers.

The aim of the Directive was to put restrictions on products containing mercury, which would have ended the 400 year old method of making barometers.

Nigel Farage MEP, Leader of the UK Independence Party said: "That we have saved the continued manufacture of barometers in the UK, should not be hailed as a victory. We should not have to face an uphill battle for common sense, every time the EU proposes yet another law which would be detrimental to the interests of businesses and people in this country.
I'm surprised they don't ban bleach too. That's pretty nasty stuff. And fire. And water.

Nothing wrong with mercury! after all, they stick it in your teeth right next to major blood vessels after all. Apparently it's much more dangerous though if you put it in a sealed glass tube.

Wasn't it Mercury that gave us Lewis Carrol's famous "Mad Hatter"? Hatter's went mad from working with the stuff...

He gave us Bohemian Rhapsody too, which further illustrates your point.

Ah yes. You mean Freddy Mercury, rather than the Alice author... :P

My Dad says they used to play with Mercury in their hands at school science lessons.

Explains how I turned out at least.

Mercury/quicksilver is very dangerous, I wouldn't mind seeing it banned as alcohol can be used instead [indeed usually is].
