Default Reports on James Whale's interest in UKIP Mayor election

UKIP's role in the next London Mayoral Election could be an extremely important one. The second preference round of voting is likely to be very close and the Conservatives need UKIP votes in the second round to win the Mayoralty in the capital. In view of David Cameron's verbal attack on UKIP on 4.4.2006, if UKIP retaliates by advising its members/voters in London not to vote Conservative (in the second round) it could prevent the Cameron-led Conservatives from winning.

The UKIP vote in the first round will almost certainly be higher than the majority the person who wins Mayor gets.

From the London Evening Standard, page 24, 24.10.2006 (and not one mention of the EU, showing that UKIP is about more than ‘europe’):

Radio presenter James Whale has entered the race to be London Mayor. The outspoken TalkSport (radio) broadcaster will challenge ‘Ken’ Livingstone for the capital’s top job in 2008 as candidate for the UK Independence Party.

He (Mr. Whale) promised that if he won an election he would scrap the congestion charge and get rid of appalling parking gestapo officers and recruit advisers ranging from Peter Stringfellow and Lord Archer.

“I think what London has done to the people of the capital is unforgivable” Mr. Whale said, adding “Under me there wouldn’t be the waste of money that there is under him. I would liberate the people from unfair taxes and continuous intrusion in their daily lives.”

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said “James Whale not only has guts but an understanding of what people think.”

But the DJ (disc jockey James Whale) may have trouble persuading Londoners he is serious. He has no experience of politics having spent his career as a ‘shock jock[ radio and television presenter.

Britannist adds: The Evening Standard have had many pro-EU editors. Note that the above article appeared deep inside today’s Standard on page 24. It is an important story and should have been in the front of the newspaper.

From BBC 1 Television Ceefax, analogue page 166, 24.10.2006 at 9.46 pm:

‘Radio host could challenge Ken’

Radio presenter James Whale could become the UK Independence Party’s candidate for London Mayor in 2008.

A party spokesman said the TalkSport broadcaster would be an “extremely strong” challenger to the Labour incumbent, ‘Ken’ Livingstone.

Mr. Whale, 55, has said he will recruit advisers including club owner Peter Stringfellow, chef Jamie Oliver and author Lord Archer if elected.

UKIP gained two London Assembly seats in the 2004 elections.

Britannist adds: James Whale can be heard on TalkSport radio nightly (not Saturdays) from 10 pm to 1 am. TalkSport is available on digital radio, via cable and satellite and ‘Freeview’ (set top boxes) and on the internet. It also broadcasts on 1053 and 1089 on the medium wave (AM).

Just like me.

Only I don't believe in forcing my view on others, which is what Whale was saying on T.V. today!

I'm liking him more and more. Especially his anti Big Brother stance and call for lower taxation.

I am (in principal) against the hunting of animals (for non-food purposes) - but am in very much in favour of religion.

The main thing is, Mr. Whale, like the huge majority of people in our country, doesn't like the EU.

He is, therefore, politically, a good man .

And he's not the only presenter at TalkSport that isn't overkeen on the EU 8) .

He sounds like a good guy. A couple of people were raving to me last year about how good his show was. (Not sure if that was his current show or an earlier one). I hope it works out and he stands for UKIP. I think that would be a good combination and that UKIP should surely be his natural political home.

My only worry is he is very independently minded. So it would be quite easy for him to fall out with someone, if they started bossing him around.

Bit like the rest of UKIP really.

Seeing as Nick Ferrari (who is very similar in views) isn't going to run any more, perhaps he could get him to join his campaign.

BTW, if you haven't heard his show, here is an archive of some of them.

He will talk about anything.

Sounds more and more like a Kilroy-Silk moment waiting to happen.

So no different from Frank Maloney, our last candidate, then
