I much prefer to travel to London but this is just a selfish view of mine as it means i dont have to travel.
On a more serious note I traveled to Telford and was impressed with the venue and I also planned to travel to Scarborough.
I think taking the conference around the country is the best idea as it means different members will attend as places like London may be too far for Northern members to travel to.

Ackshully, that has the potential to backfire nastily:
  • - If UKIP is worth covering by that time, journos would travel

    - effectively mandating an overnight is a good thing, as it creates opportunities to mix with them on UKIP's terms (but drop the week-end thing, it really annoys professionals with young children)

    - If UKIP is in the doldrums by then (highly likely), making it easy to cover the conference also makes it easy to write up knocking stories. Sketchwriters especially will have lots of fun.

    - a London conference is more expensive, harder to manage, and frought with legal implications (see my other posting by Mark Thomas about SOCPA).
But Nigel has spoken, and thus it will now be.

HeeHaw.

I was looking forward to visiting Scarborough but must admit London is easier to get to. I also like the Friday/Saturday decision but can't wait until we have the full week by the seaside (One day maybe!) Telford wasn't easy to get to, nor was it particularly cheap and anyone trying to get a train from Birmingham on Sunday soon discovered Telford station didn't open on Sundays.

London based conferences may get some extra national publicity

But regional conferences gain massive local publicity

Held in Exeter it would have tremendous support and get good media coverage and it is easy to get to via the M5, remember Exeter had the biggest hustings!

Does this decision mean there will be more candidates or fewer candidates than previously intended? The inference is that there will be more but it doesn't actually state that.
The original intention was to run a 'lend us your vote' campaign and only run in the list system, and not in the FPTP areas. The idea was that people would then use their second vote to support UKIP, many perhaps seeing it as a protest vote while also being able to vote for their normal party too.

Now UKIP will stand in every seat, so yes there will be more candidates, but I would think that it decreases the odds of having anyone elected.
Thanks for the info. I prefer the new decision. There'll be other minor parties with a lend us your vote kind of campaign. I don't think there is a lot of credibility if you don't stand for the constituencies so maybe a vote for us twice & if not vote for us once campaign will work. Proof will be in the pudding. But there is already the experience of the 2003 elections. UKIP stood in 20 seats (certainly not the top 20 seats for UKIP to aim to contest) and got over 5% in 8 of them; with one over 10%. The best top up result was 4.4% where we were still beaten by the Greens. Having said that the lib dems only needed 10.0% in North Wales to get a top up seat (where ukip got 2.6%). I certainly hope UKIP will contest every seat this time.

To me, it would make sense to have the confrence in places where UKIP at least has a following and some support - I would oppose London because staying overnight is so darn expensive - after all, it's the overnight stay that makes it a real event.

Don't know if I'm right but wasn't Bristol the most successful conference with the highest attendance.

Might be easy for me to get to but then i don't live in Newcastle (6.5 hours),Liverpool (5 hours), Manchester (5 hours) not to mention Scotland

I also think the lack of attendance at Telford conference might have something to do with the troubles within the party.

Not in my case or in any of the other UKIPPERS in this area I spoke to, it was just the fact of distance= expense! Held at Bristol it would cover a wide area within 2hrs of driving from Bristol, Southwest as far as Plymouth, east as far as London, north as far as Stoke- on- Trent, North east as far as Leicester, West as far as the west coast of Wales.

Unfortunately for those UKIPPERS in Scotland and the North anything lower than Carlisle is a bit of a hike!

I don't think you can please everybody but i think Bristol would be a far better choice and would be more accessible to a greater number of members.
