Tributes to Trevor, Mr East Yorkshire

TRIBUTES have been paid to a renowned local politician and businessman who has lost his 19-month battle against cancer.

Trevor John Pearson, known as 'Mr East Yorkshire' after he spearheaded a campaign to return the county's name after it was changed to Humberside, died at his home in Flamborough last Friday morning.

When asked, days before he died, about his proudest moment, Mr Pearson said: "Returning us to our rightful place – East Yorkshire."

He picked up his nickname after a letter in support of his campaign, addressed only to 'Mr East Yorkshire, Flamborough', found its way to his home.

Mr Pearson followed his father, Alderman Stanley Pearson, into politics, and the pair often voiced their differences of opinion while in the council.

As well as being a councillor on both East Yorkshire Borough and East Riding of Yorkshire councils, Mr Pearson also stood in two general elections, first in 1997 for the Referendum Party, and in 2001 for the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).

Another man of honour RIP.

A good man, obviously. Anyone who campaigns or has campaigned against the artificial county of 'Humberside' is to be praised. Not only because of the East Riding (East Yorkshire) - but also because of north Lincolnshire which europhile Heath also put under Humberside against the wishes of its people.
