Default Solve the prison crisis

Maybe if we had the balls to dicuss offshoreing our "most vulnerable members of society" to India thus solving the prison crisis (and maybe the reoffending rate) the voters out there might start to take notice.

Of course you'd have to take on the prisoners rights industry but it's possible the vast majority of law abiding people might just think it's not a bad idea. I reckon the annual cost of keeping a prisoner abroad would be halved.

Default prison factory

To throw in another idea: I remembered reading about prison factorys (unlike the Gulag!)

Quote:
In recent years, more than 70 companies have employed inmates in 16 states. (11) In Arizona, Best Western International uses prisoners to operate the hotel's telephone reservation system. Trans World Airlines hires young offenders in California to handle its telephone reservations. A private corporation, Prison Rehabilitative Industries & Diversified Enterprises (PRIDE) of Clearwater, Florida, manages 53 prison work programs. Wages are used to pay taxes, costs of imprisonment, restitution, and family support. (12) Some individuals on probation contribute to the cost of their supervision while working at regular jobs. (13) Before 1980, inmates of Maine State Prison manufactured arts and crafts, which were sold through the prison store. Individuals made as much as $30,000 per year. Some even found that their business was successful enough that crime no longer held its former attraction for them. (14)

I like it....... they've taken our call centres.... and they do a lot of illegal business with our credit cards....... a few extra criminals to look after would be a great idea.
Just put down the dysentry and conditions to the prisoners education process

I've always thought the answer is an island off say Scotland and give them basic barrack style shelter and the seeds etc to grow their own food and let them get on with it. Education could be given up in a secure building accessed via helicopter. Security would be a couple of boat patrols and when an individuals time was up he would be collected from a pier and taken back to the main land.

It would be so simple
