Was anybody there for the Q&A session, I'm told that Nigel fled the stage having been routed over the BOO issue by the increasingly popular Delroy Young.
Looks like there's a disciplinary committee hearing coming your way if you're not careful Delroy. the date hasn't been set but the outcome has. |

Nigel said that we should not field candidates against BOO MPs.
Mike Natrass then clarified and said that what Nigel was saying is that when we have enough candidates to stand in all 646 seats we will, but until then there is no point standing against signed up BOO candidates as we weaken our cause. So in other words, we should focus our few candidates on seats where the MPs have not signed BOO. Nigel then 'fled' the stage but it was to do a BBC interview, not because he was in a huff. |

Nigel presented his view regarding BOO (I didn't agree), but did not leave the stage over this, some toys did come out of the pram however when he responded to Delroy's answer very good, very forceful (and again I didn't totally agree) to which a signifcant applause was given, deservedly so imo, to Delroy. I didn't vote for Nigel in the recent election either but there needs to be some accuracy in comments being posted here. |

It amazes me that this sort of thing is a big issue at the moment.
UKIP doesn't have the resource to fight all seats as things stand. Therefore, it has to pick and choose the seats it fights anyway. Going up against BOO candidates is just one of many considerations that the local branch and leadership have to consider.

If everybody at conference on sunday stood as a general election candidate we'd still be about 200 short.
Nigel is being pragmatic,POLITICALLY astute, sensible and doing the right thing .We're talking about 10 tory and 1 labour mp at present----if we get to 20 or 30 we'd be winning for the cause-----a long way to go yet. This initiatrive will keep the EU on the agenda despite the other parties trying to bury it.It may well bring more financial support. It will stop us alienating certain potential UKIP voters. Only the kamikazee wing of UKIP cannot see it makes sense. |

I'm concerned here at the logic being used - or at least arbitarily selected at the time.
Quote:
Logic one is that UKIP can't field enough candidates - in which case we need to identify where we should stand to give our best shot of winning. This would almost be true if we had geographically mobile candidates, which in the main we do not. In which case the end result is that if a branch chooses to fight a seat, they will fight the seat - is head office going to issue an edict not to? The best that can be hoped for is that the branch see's some sense and supports a neighbouring campaign and does not fight their own. Logic two is that UKIP should not oppose BOO candidates. Fine, but in which case it is no using then adding 'until we have the candidates to do so'. It will never be the case that where there are BOO candidates it will automatically follow that UKIP has a weak branch or branches surrounding. I don't have a problem particularly with either view - don't fight all seats because we can't due to resource, or don't stand up against BOO candidates. But don't mix up the two, or we'll tie ourselves in knots. |
