Default EU 'Parliament' - It all sounds Irish to Godfrey Bloom MEP

Godfrey Bloom, the UK Independence Party MEP for Yorkshire, wrote in the letters page of the Sunday Telegraph edition of 8.10.2006 "While you are correct to report that the EU 'Parliament' is spending a small fortune to recruit interpreters who speak Irish ('That was the week', 24.9.2006, Sunday Telegraph), I think you are wrong about the number of MEPs who speak Irish as a first language. I sat in the chamber in Strasberg last week and it all sounded Irish to me."

Couldn't agree more! I have never looked upon Godfrey Bloom as an asset to our cause!

Default Speaking your mind

Godfrey is a Yorkshireman. A survey was carried out a few weeks ago in which people in various parts of the country were asked how willing they would be to give their views on different matters. The study (reported in the press) found that Yorkshire people were the most enthusiastic in agreeing to give their views on 'issues' if asked.

The people of Northern Ireland were the least likely to give their views willingly on matters of the day.

I found the comment vaguely amusing. I won't speculate that the historic background to the comment relates to the Celtic language as I don't know that it does. But if the other EU nations are so offended by 'witty' remarks they want to kick us out of the EU altogether I hope Godfrey will keep up the good work.

Didn't the government spend £400,000 on a Cornish language programme for the 500 Cornish speakers in the world? I'm pretty sure they did.

Met the guy for the first time at the Telford Conference. Highly amusing and very articulate. Having spent sometime in his company I can understand how the press will have a whale of a time with his observations. Reported accurately or not.

I find the reported comment here very amusing and considering the target is the EU (not the Irish) most adroit.

The last true Cornish speaker apparently died 200 years ago, the Cornish spoken to-day is a made up language which the "Cornish elite" claim is the real thing , even though no living person has ever heard true Cornish spoken. I prefer the "Jethro" version!
