Make Lifers Share Cells Call

Hundreds of prisoners are allowed to occupy cells without sharing, even though there is room in them for a second inmate, according to the UK Independence Party.

Yorkshire and Humber region MEP, Godfrey Bloom said today (9.10.06): "When the Government is risking the safety of the British public by moving criminals to less secure prisons, why are murderers and other violent criminals allowed a cell on their own?"

According to the Home Office, it is prison policy to allow lifers to occupy cells on their own. However, there is room enough in them to have bunk beds in the great majority of cases.

Mr Bloom added: "Surely it is more important that all violent criminals are locked up, even if this means they share cells - after all prison is supposed to be a punishment.

“This is only a short term solution. What is needed are more prisons and for foreign criminals to be deported."

Rember porridge? They didn't have their own cells in that, did they.

Mind they didn't have playstations either.

The Lib Dems will be campaigning for all prisoners to have Sky+ installed.

For those on their second or more term inside:-

Put them on shifts sleeping three to a bed.

8 hours in the sack, 8 hours working and the rest doing association.

No 'ownership' of cells, just a locker to keep your belongings in.

Good enough for say a third of the prison population and everyone spends their first month in the 'hard' system so that they know whats to come next time they offend.

Instead of them getting time off for good behaviour and being released they get released into the 'regular' prison system, any bad behaviour and they get moved back onto hard time.
