What was newsworthy about the old parties conferences? Yet they all got blanket coverage and were shown live on the parliament channel.
Smaller parties have to try 100 times harder to get in the media and even then, it's the bad stuff that ususaly gets them in. The system is throughly rigged in favour of the establishment.

The difference is that they are potentially parties of government with widespread public support. If Cameron says something about the NHS it might well matter to the public. If UKIP said the same thing it wouldn't matter.

As I said, that's just locking down of power by the establishment.
That effectively means no small party will ever get fair coverage, because they are not seem as mainstream, Back luck for them that the mainstream is giving away increasingly to the internet. First smaller party to realise that, get's a chance.
