Hello again,
I am chairing the Cardiff Debate championships next week and this is an issue which tomorrow I will have to ask questions to. The people I will be listening to are for the banning of compulsory prayer in state schools. I have a few questions for them, but this is really an issue which im not too clued up on. Any information or questions I could put to them would be very helpful |

Should never be compulsory unless it's a private school and the parents except it when signing on.

Like it or not, the state in question has a head of state that took an oath to protect the official church of the land. The state schools simply reflect the legal committment that their head of state made all those years ago.
If there is no legal requirement to acknowledge a prayer said at assembly time in schools, then utlimately all forms of succinct acknowledgement of the recognition of the rights and responsibilities under the crown of its citizens become irrelevent. Or something like that. |

At the very least prayers in school are a lesson in themselves - they are all going to have to pray someday, somewhere.
I quite like the moral aspect of prayer, even if you strip away the religion and just consider it as a period of contemplation whilst being in your own quiet space within. Not a bad thing to be teaching kids, IMHO. |

Which is why you should have the CHOICE of prayer for your kids if you and your child wants.
Personally, when I have some brats, I will let my kids make their own mind up, after I have explained the goods and bads of them all. I'll probably take them along to a few different churches and give them my own view too.
