The South Essex Branch of UKIP covers 7 parliamentary constituencies. The organisation consists of a small committee and leafleters, no more than 25 in all. They would have voted for Richardski for the most part. Any votes for NF in this area would mostly have come from those who do not even bother to turn out for meetings. Hence we have give up holding public meetings as we have to concentrate our resources on fund raising and running elections. A question I have been asking myself recently is what we expect of our membership, and what they expect when they join. If they think that their membership subscription helps the Party, they would be very annoyed to learn that if they paid through the Ashford office, only a fraction of their sub. went to the running of the Party, and if they paid for five years it is quite likely the party will make a loss out of their membership. Off hand, does anybody remember who was to the forefront of the Ashford scam? |

Good post M. The remarkable thing, as has probably been said umpteen times, is that the MAJORITY of people that one meets and talks to (not in Islington) are almost all of the same mind which was so expertly encapsulated in your post - but they won't do anything about it. I've said this plenty of times before but inaction is one of UKIP's biggest failings; presented with a resounding vote of No Confidence in the EU constitution they and fellow Euro realists sat on their hands and thought, "Job well done" Well, it was to a certain extent but they never followed it up. A weekend-long Massive street demonstration, in Brussels or Strasbourg, drawing from all European residents who felt the tide was with them and affording the opportunity to others who wanted to express themselves as well, was passed over. Consequently the advantage is with the enemy who are beavering away and making the most of us having taken our eye off the ball. The petition was pathetic. People need to show their anger and for it to be shown on TV all over the EU - a petition is just tossed in the compost. There are various factors that still suggest a big protest march - COMPETENTLY put together - would make a point; be shown on TV to encourage others to get off their backsides; and - who knows - bring forth some much needed funding.

I had taken M's post as a plea for us to focus on the concerns of the everyday people and have policies and back up to match. NF victory speech implies that he wishes to appeal to those individuals who would be considered as the right wing of the Tory Party. Whereas this approach, if consistently followed, might attract more members and voters it is unlikely to win us MP's for these views, as a whole, are probably shared by no more than 10% of the voters. There are, however, some items which appeal across the political spectrum [anti pc, immigration] but once low taxes becomes a featured policy the everyday people can translate this into less support for the NHS and education, two areas the majority support. |
