Millions lost in translation

The European Parliament has today (5.9.06) confirmed the cost of translating its entire output into all the languages of the European Union at a colossal 1,123 million euros (£758.5 million), in 2005. Jeffrey Titford, the UK Independence Party MEP, who sits on the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee said: "This just highlights the massive cost of the whole EU enterprise. As the EU expands, so does the bureaucracy.

"A full-day meeting with interpretation costs 88,500 euros (£59,775) for the Parliament and 63,000 euros (£42,552) for the Commission. This, of course, will grow exponentially. For example, Irish Gaelic has recently been included as an official language".

The UK Independence Party has discovered that these costs could be substantially reduced if the contracts were put out to tender on the open market rather than using the current system, which involves employing more and more translators.

"One firm that we spoke to quoted £500-£700 for a day's interpretation between two European languages, which suggests that the costs involved could be halved. Making Irish the EU's 21st language - at least for translation of documents and SOME interpretation - will cost 3.5 million euros (£2.3 million) per annum, once sufficient translators are available.

"How helpful it will be for the 85,000 inhabitants of the Gaeltacht, a remote area on the West Coast of Ireland, to have the privilege of reading all the Euro-gibberish produced by the European Parliament, in their mother tongue. It equates to 40 euros (£27) per inhabitant per year and that is just for translation costs, never mind the rest of the European empire in the making. There are much better ways of spending European taxpayers' money".

What the hell !!

I mean seriously, can people not see that all this money is fully unjustified?

This huge amount of money must be able to go to better causes and campaigns?

This amount of money is ridiculous and should be spent on much worthier campaigns and issues !
