They do claim to be "an independent all-party think tank. Our independence is our strength allowing us to be free to follow our own policy agenda and put the national interest above party political considerations."
In practice they have always been a Tory pressure group, but they seem to be trying a bit harder to be independent - which is good I think. |

Good to see UKIP doing numbers at last. First reactions -
I see the Bruges group have got Press Office disease in that they misprint dates (the publication date on page 2 is August 2005!). Why does the pamphlet use gross rather than net contributions? Did they consult the Trade Policy Research Centre? They've calculated, for instance, that the CAP "costs the average family of four £1,500 a year". No reference to Minford's book, which included a number for increased cost of manufactured goods. Bra wars? Shoe wars? "The costs of over-regulation have been assumed to remain the same" (page 16, just like that) but they are the biggest single item, they have risen substantially since Milne's book as new regulations come in, and I'm sure there are higher government numbers. Will people be able to relate to numbers presented like this? |

Thank goodness GB has done something re a cost/benefit analysis .
My argument started with Nattrass over the fact that UKIP had not produced a pamphlet on the subject nor one on exit strategy etc.In fact apart from GB`s occasional and welcome efforts and Godfrey`s excellent paper some while ago absolutely damn all comes out of the MEPs that can be used by UKIP. However Nattrass ,no doubt backed by others, wasn`t interested in such matters ,all that appeared to matter was that no one other than the MEPs had a say in what they did. Just think what they could do if they all clubbed together and produced some hard hitting papers on the EU . Instead the research dept. in Brussels has produced a paper on Education and soon one on Flat Tax ! Great stuff no doubt ,but we are hear to wake the British up NOW and get us out of the EU ,not just show them how clever we are at what could be done once we are out . If we provide useful well researched stuff for the press to use they will do a lot of our job for us . I lay the blame for the lack of action firmly and squarely on the doorstep of NF for not getting a grip on the MEPs`research and putting it to good use . Well done Gerard .One well researched paper reported here is worth thousands of hours spent pontificating in a pretend parliament . |
