As a former returning officer for UKIP elections, I have to say that there is nothing more irksome than vague and unsubstantiated grumbles about the electoral process. I would always demand a specific complaint in writing, stating which rules were allegedly being broken and with supporting evidence where appropriate. Anything less is simply an unhelpful exercise in undermining the probity of the election process.

The returning officer must be and must be seen to be above such things. All candidates must be treated equally. Any who break the rules must be dealt with exactly the same regardless of how mighty they may be within the party structure.
Of course, any returning officer who acts according to this ethos will not last long in UKIP (eg Craig Mackinlay [2004 NEC election] and myself [2003 MEP list election]). |

Do I assume you do have your doubts about the probity of these leadership elections? :-( |
