Default Whose benefit? Certainly not the hard-pressed taxpayer

Figures released by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) show that over the past three years an estimated £13 million in income support, jobseekers allowance and various other social security benefits has been paid to inmates serving prison sentences.

"The Government is now adding insult to, in many cases, personal injury", according to Gerard Batten MEP (London), the UK Independence Party's spokesman on Home Affairs. "Handing out welfare benefits to those in prison is a disgrace, when all that the many people who are the victims of crime are left with, is a leaflet from Victim Support .

"While pensioners and young families struggle to pay ever-escalating council tax, fuel bills which have risen by 100% in the past year and Gordon Brown’s 1001 new stealth taxes, there is one group in our society that’s coining it", he continued.

Naturally the Government has no idea exactly how much taxpayers’ money has been spent on rewarding thieves, rapists, murderers and other felons over the past few years nor does it have a plan to deal with the problem. Astonishingly, a DWP spokesperson said ‘We have only just started producing the data on this – but we are not complacent’!

"Just incompetent, ignorant and breathtakingly inefficient", said Batten. "Every day the tax take goes up and up and - it would seem in direct correlation – the level of competence and fiscal discipline goes down and down".

Notes:

The figures were revealed today in a Parliamentary answer by Pensions Minister James Plaskitt.
