The leadership election count will be held at Conway Hall in Bloomsbury, Central London, on Tuesday, September 12. The Acting Returning Officer, Geoffrey Kingscott, is seeking Party members in good standing to assist with the counting of the votes. A condition is that the applicant must not have signed as a proposer, seconder or assentor on the nomination papers of any of the leadership candidates.

The leadership candidates will each be appointing their own observers to monitor the count.

Applications should be made to Geoffrey Kingscott, Acting Returning Officer, Leadership Election, UK Independence Party, PO Box 408, Newton Abbot, TQ12 9BG or via email at gensec@ukip.org
Remind me why this was moved to London?

Perhaps to make it easier for you and me to attend Matt.

The only valid excuse I can think of is that given the unexpected media attention we've been getting we may manage to get some hacks to attend in London whereas - no matter how much booze you offer you won't get national covergae if its down in the west country.

Still it would have been nice to know.

I am not sure that it was moved at all. Although the ballots are sent to Lexdrum House, I think that the count has always been arranged for London.

Would have been the easiest thing to do.

Though if there is a going to be a major media gala event, then that would be a fair explanation.

Of course, a cynic might just say that it will take place in London, with the media present, just so that the winner can be very publicly announced.

Kinda makes it more 'official' that way, and perhaps much less open to challenge, wouldn't you think?

Given the interest shown by the BBC, at least, doing it in London makes good PR sense to me.

I checked this directly with Geoffrey Kingscott a couple of weeks ago.

I am advised by him that it was always his intention to have the ballot papers returned to Lexdrum House whilst the count would take place in London, primarily to encourage media attendance. Seems reasonable to me.
