I also listened to this debate and almost fell off my chair when I heard this Richard character demonstrating his obvious political shortcomings by jumping on the anti-immigrant bandwagon, and a poor Powellite impersonation about fighting in the streets . And some think HE is the best choice for leader? God help UKIP if he wins!

UKIP should really stop trying to out-anti other anti-immigrant parties, especially when others, not UKIP, are likely to gain from an increase in the talking-up of the issue.

If Richard really has a vision it is going to have to be something better and more in depth than his otherwise wasted opportunity on that Radio show.

I have to agree.

When i heard Richard on the radio, he just lost my vote.

He showed up his lack of political judgement and, in my opinion, did not come across well as a strong leader.

I have been in two minds so far as to which candidate to vote for, but his performance settled it. I think the new leader needs to listen carefully to Richard's ideas to sort out the internal organisation of the party, but he's not leadership material.

oooooooohhhhhhhhh! Ski has the bottle to mention the 'I' word and suddenly people are running scared! Good for Richard for having the courage to bring up the subject which is high on most people's priorities, but kept under the carpet by most.

Ski was merely pointing out that UKIP has to have a firm and fair policy on immigration, as immigration is one of the major tools being used by the EU to soften us up for integration.

Listen to Tuesdays Simon Mayo programme - the UKIP bit starts at 2 hours 20 minutes into the programme. Note that the introduction is heavy on that UKIP is seen as a single issue party, note that the radio states that last years GE was a disapointment - that UKIP needs a new leader to take them forward from that single issue, amateur protest party into a serious party.

All accurate, and all supported by Farage. Actually the pre-amble to the candidates is well worth listening to just to understand how UKIP is seen from outside.

After listening to the Today programme this morning, I'm surprised that immigration isn't top of the agenda for all the parties.

The immigration service has stated that it is unable to deal with illegal immigrants, even when they are handed to them on a plate. No wonder everyone is heading for the UK when we are so impotent to deal with people who shouldn't be here. It was a real eye opener for me.

Yes, yes, we know immigration is the issue of the moment.

Going back to the broadcast (which I've now listened back to), Richard said no to more immigration. I think this is naive at the very best. Stop people coming to work in The City? What about students? What about IT workers? What about multinationals based here who want to bring people in? These are just a few examples. This is not the real world. If he was only going to talk about immigration, he could and should have made the EU point. Instead, he chose to use the phrase "pro British". We know the overtones of that in this context and they ain't nice.

Of the other three candidates, David Noakes didn't sustain his position, DCB sounded to me at least as if he was on some sort of sleep drug, and with Farage's piece you have to ask - if the party was so ineffective for such a long time from 1993, and if its strategy is so poor now, why would Farage be a good buy?

I'm sticking here to the broadcast. Of course some of what the commentators said was comically inaccurate, but I'm sure they were right in saying that UKIP needs to be more than a single issue party, because the EU is not an important enough issue to most people.

If I were voting just on the basis of the programme, I'd be saying:

Farage No, he's been in the party for years and it's got its strategy completely wrong, so long membership isn't a recommendation

Noakes No, sounded fanatical

Suchorzewski No, sounded too like BNP

Bannerman probably the best of an uninspiring bunch, but pretty uninspiring himself.

However, I shan't be voting just on the basis of the programme.

I'm glad we got the exposure.

This wasn't just about Richard using the "I" word. The fact remains that UKIP will only be jumping on an otherwise crowded bandwagon if immigration becomes a major platform issue for the party's new leadership, and by heavily focusing on the issue may only benefit UKIP in the short-term and lead to increased accusations of BNP-like tendencies.

If a vision has to exist, it has to be more encompasing than just singing tunes to front page headlines. In this area, UKIP can only just about hum the melody, never mind belting out the chorus.
